I think it's a sparrow, we call it a huismus in the Netherlands, the like to stay with a lot of the same birds in one big birdhouse.

Hugs Yvon.

He looks like a House Sparrow...at least he matches the picture/description in my bird book. I will be starting my exchange stitching real soon!

Hi...Looks like an English House Sparrow....if you google it you will pull up some great pictures. They are an invasive species and do take over martin houses. I keep my bird house doors covered until the 'martins' arrive otherwise they will do great damage to the martin nests.

Hi again...
If the sparrows are there when the 'martins' arrive, most times they (the martins) will not nest and will move on because of the damage the sparrows do. That's why they are considered to be an invasive species. They are not a native bird.

Hi, Yvon is correct it is a sparrow. I looked up sparrow pictures on google and came accross a neat website. The link info for it is http://www.lincstrust.org.uk/factsheets/nestbox/housesparrow.php
It has both the male and female pictures but doesn't state which is which. I think it is a male. I have them in my area in the summer in numbers litterally in the dozens at times. It is more technically called a House sparrow. Hope this helps.
